Why Organic?
There is a lot of press about the importance of eating organic food – we all know we should be eating organic produce but we don’t necessarily know why we should be eating it! We’ve tried to explain simply the reasons why we feel people should eat organic and, most importantly, why we should be choosing organic produce for our children.
Why Organic?
- It’s healthy as, on average, organic food contains higher levels of vitamin C and essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron and chromium, as well as antioxidants;
- Organic food has no additives, which can cause health problems such as heart disease, osteoporosis and hyperactivity;
- No pesticides, over 400 chemical pesticides are routinely used in conventional farming, and the UK government has recently found high levels of pesticide residues in baby food;
- No GM crops and ingredients are allowed under organic standards;
- High Standards, organic food comes from trusted sources. All organic farms and food companies are inspected at least once a year and the Standards for organic food are laid down in European law;
- Many people prefer organic food because they say it tastes better.

Why choose organic for your children?
Existing regulations on the amount of pesticide residues that non-organic foods may contain are based on 'acceptable' levels for adult consumption. Babies and young children, however, are at greater risk because the immaturity of their organs and body systems makes them more vulnerable to toxins.
Because children's diet is often restricted to just a few types of less processed food - like apples, potatoes or carrots - they may receive higher exposures. From conception until one year of age, children are at their most vulnerable. During this critical stage of development cells are multiplying at their peak, yet the body has a limited diet to draw upon.
A baby's digestive system is also more efficient than that of an adult at absorbing foods, enabling nutrients to be used more quickly, but also making the body more vulnerable to toxins. Immature kidneys are not as proficient at excreting harmful substances, so they may circulate in the body for longer.
No one yet knows what effect genetic engineering may have on food products and the health of those who consume them. So the best way to protect yourself and your baby from possible problems is to choose organic produce. Organic foods are produced without genetically modified ingredients.
